New Luanda International Airport and Visa Exemption

10 de outubro de 2023

Angola's economy has been given a new impetus through various initiatives, with the inauguration of the New Luanda Airport and the visa exemption for citizens from 98 countries being two significant measures in this regard.

We'll discuss how these initiatives can be catalysts for the growth of the tourism sector and the attraction of foreign investment, helping to open up the Angolan economy.

New Luanda Airport

The inauguration of the New Luanda International Airport, which will take place on 10 November, represents a significant step forward for Angola's transport infrastructure. This airport, with an investment of around three billion dollars, is expected to have a capacity of 15 million passengers a year.

China made a substantial contribution to the financing, totalling 1.4 billion dollars. The airport is located in the Bom Jesus commune, around 40 km south-east of the centre of Luanda, with a railway line planned to connect the airport to the city centre. This project, which began in 2013 and was taken over by the Angolan state in 2017, is seen by the government as a crucial investment for the country's economy.

Exemption from tourist Visas

The recent visa exemption measure for citizens of 98 countries is an initiative that brings Angola into line with a global trend of travel facilitation, which is essential for stimulating tourism and business. According to a presidential decree, citizens of these countries are exempt from visa requirements for stays of up to 30 days per entry and up to 90 days per year.

This measure, which aims to simplify and accelerate entry procedures to Angola, has been particularly emphasised in countries such as Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, the United States, Russia and China, and is part of a wider strategy to promote and expand tourism.

Economic impact of these measures

These initiatives are in line with Angola's aim to diversify its economy and increase its attractiveness to foreign investment. The new airport will significantly improve air connectivity and accessibility to the country, while the visa exemption could increase the number of visitors, thus boosting the tourism sector.

In addition, by facilitating the entry of tourists and investors, these measures can contribute to increasing confidence in Angola's business environment, thus encouraging foreign investment.

Taken together, these actions reflect a commitment to improving Angola's infrastructure and openness to the world, creating a more favourable environment for foreign investment.
